Review: We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

This spellbinding and terrifyingly claustrophobic novel is a must read for horror and thriller fans alike.  Shirley Jackson's last novel, first published in 1962 follows two sisters Merricat and Constance, whose family was murdered with arsenic in their sugar bowl. Merricat was spared because she had been sent up to bed with no dinner andContinue reading "Review: We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson"

Failed Friday: September 7, 2018

There's not much I hate more than not being able to finish a book. Unfortunately, it does happen to me once in a while. I know some people prescribe to the idea that you can never give up on a book, so they slog through to the end, hating every minute of it. Thankfully, I don't feel the need to punish myself so unnecessarily.

Audiobook Review: My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella

Sophie Kinsella has always been one of my go-to authors for fluffy comedic chick lit. She always delivers and although none of her books are awe-inducing they are always fun. My Not So Perfect Life follows Katie Brenner, a woman whose dream is to work and live in London.  Unfortunately, the world conspires against herContinue reading "Audiobook Review: My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella"

The monthly list of all the books on my growing to be read pile.

Review: Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl

This novel follows five friends who have been in a car accident that causes them to almost die. They are trapped in a time loop called a neverworld wake. Doomed to relive the same 11 hours over and over until they can vote and unanimously agree which one of them should live. Everyone else willContinue reading "Review: Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl"

Review: Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

Salt to the Sea is told from the point of view of three refugees and one German soldier, who are all destined to board the ill-fated Wilhelm Gustloff. This is a gripping and poignant story with plenty of historical significance. This book was fast paced and I had trouble putting it down. The characters, except forContinue reading "Review: Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys"

Review: The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes

The Shining Girls is a genre-twisting thriller/sci-fi novel that I was very excited to read.  The plot follows a serial killer named Harper Curtis, who finds a time portal in 1930s Chicago. He uses the portal to jump back an forth through time killing women who "shine" and taking trophies. He seems all but unstoppableContinue reading "Review: The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes"

Review: Supergirl – Being Super by Mariko Tamaki and Joelle Jones

Mariko Tamaki teams up with artist Joelle Jones to retell the familiar backstory of Kara Danvers AKA Supergirl. Now, you can't reinvent the wheel but you can make it more fun and give it a good polish and that's exactly what the team of Tamaki and Jones did with Supergirl: Being Super. This rendition ofContinue reading "Review: Supergirl – Being Super by Mariko Tamaki and Joelle Jones"
